      <title>Chinese Association for Biomaterials (CAB) is calling for nominations for the following awards:</title>
      <description>&lt;P&gt;The &lt;STRONG&gt;CAB Global Biomaterials Leadership Award&lt;/STRONG&gt; recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions and demonstrated global leadership in the field of biomaterials research and translation. The winner receives a cash honorarium of $2000 and a trophy. No more than two awards are given each year.&lt;/P&gt;

&lt;P&gt;The &lt;STRONG&gt;CAB Distinguished Leadership and Service Award&lt;/STRONG&gt; recognizes an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and exceptional services to the CAB community.&lt;/P&gt;

&lt;P&gt;The &lt;STRONG&gt;CAB Trainee/Young/Mid-Career Investigator Awards&lt;/STRONG&gt; recognize individuals who have demonstrated significant achievements in the field of biomaterials research.&amp;nbsp;CAB membership is required for our Chinese colleagues to receive these awards. No more than two awards are given each year for each of the three categories.&lt;/P&gt;

&lt;P&gt; The candidates for the CAB Trainee Award must be within 3 years of receipt of PhD degree and should not exceed the rank of Post-doctoral Fellow or equivalent.&lt;/P&gt;

&lt;P&gt; The candidates for the CAB Young Investigator Award must be within 10 years of receipt of PhD degree and should not exceed the rank of Assistant Professor or equivalent.&lt;/P&gt;

&lt;P&gt; The candidates for the CAB Mid-Career Investigator Award must carry a rank higher than Assistant Professor or equivalent and should not exceed the rank of Associate Professor or equivalent.&lt;/P&gt;

&lt;P&gt;Each CAB member can nominate up to two candidates. Each nomination should include a curriculum vitae of the nominee together with one nomination letter from the nominator. All nominations will be considered by the CAB Award Committee. Nomination packages should be sent to the CAB Award Committee co-chairs, Professor Ke Cheng at &lt;U&gt;Ke_Cheng@unc.edu&lt;/U&gt; and Professor Xiaoming He at &lt;U&gt;shawnhe@umd.edu&lt;/U&gt; by January 31, 2023. The awardees will be notified by e-mail. All the recipients will receive a plaque and be recognized at the CAB Annual Meeting during the Society for Biomaterials Annual Meeting 2023 in San Diego, USA (April 27-30, 2023).&lt;/P&gt;

      <title>CAB reception and award ceremony at 2022 SFB</title>
      <description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;font color="#000000" face="Times New Roman"&gt;The unprecedent COVID-19 pandemic had interrupted all in-person conferences and meetings. Now CAB Reception and Award Ceremony for 2022 is finally back with an exciting schedule to bring you the best gathering and networking you expect from CAB. This year’s reception took place in Baltimore, MD on April 28, 2022, as a special even at the SFB annual meeting.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

The candidates with strong biology and surgery experimental experience and interest in the areas of tissue regeneration is sought to participate in the NIH and DOD funded projects. The Lab particularly emphasizes development of multidisciplinary and novel approaches to address relevant biomedical questions in musculoskeletal tissue applications.       <title>Vitamin Lipid Nanoparticle-enabled Cell Therapy for Sepsis</title>
      <description>&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;font color="#000000" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"&gt;Sepsis, a severe condition caused by infections, affects millions of people&lt;img src="https://chinesebiomaterials.org/resources/Pictures/Picture1.jpg" alt="" title="" border="0" width="441" height="171" align="right" style="margin: 10px 10px 5px 20px;"&gt; worldwide every year and remains the leading cause of death in hospitals. In addition, multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have become an additional challenge in the treatment of sepsis and thus, effective therapeutics are urgently needed. A recent paper from &lt;strong&gt;Dr. Yizhou Dong&lt;/strong&gt; and his collaborators at The Ohio State University reported a novel approach for overcoming MDR bacteria-induced sepsis that combines vitamin derived lipid nanoparticles with adoptive macrophage therapy. In this study, the adoptive transfer of macrophages containing antimicrobial peptides in the lysosomes (MACs) reduced bacterial burden and improve survival in the sepsis mouse models.       <title>A “Subcutaneous Pancreas"</title>

      <title>Coin-Sized Smart Insulin Patch Regulates Blood Sugar in Pigs</title>
      <description>&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;font color="#000000"&gt;&lt;span style="background-color: white;"&gt;&lt;font color="#222222" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"&gt;Glucose-responsive insulin delivery systems that mimic pancreatic endocrine function &lt;img src="https://chinesebiomaterials.org/resources/Pictures/Smart%20Insulin%20Patch%20CAB.png" alt="" title="" border="0" width="238" height="153" align="right" style="margin: 10px 10px 10px 20px;"&gt;could enhance health and improve quality of life for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes with reduced &lt;em&gt;β&lt;/em&gt;-cell function.&amp;nbsp;Recently, a research team led by &lt;strong&gt;Zhen Gu&lt;/strong&gt;, a professor of bioengineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering and a member of CAB, developed a smart insulin-delivery patch that could one day monitor and manage glucose levels in people with diabetes and deliver necessary insulin dosage. In the experiments, one quarter-sized patch successfully controlled glucose levels in pigs (&amp;gt; 25 kg) with type I diabetes for about 20 hours.       <title>CAB-SFB Workshop: Biomaterials Science Excellence and Technology Transition</title>
      <description>&lt;p align="justify"&gt;&lt;font face="Arial, sans-serif"&gt;In collaboration with Society for Biomaterials (SFB), CAB successfully&lt;img src="https://chinesebiomaterials.org/resources/Pictures/PIC1.jpg" alt="" title="" border="0" width="266" height="191" align="right" style="margin: 8px;"&gt; organized a Biomaterials Science Excellence and Technology Translation Workshop at the SFB Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA on April 3, 2019. The workshop included invited presentations/lectures from global biomaterial leaders in biomaterials science and a panel discussion to discuss biomaterial innovation, international collaboration, venture investment, company startups, intellectual property, and other key elements en route to successful biomaterial technology translation. CAB also took this opportunity to present awards to a few outstanding scientists in three categories: CAB Global Biomaterials Leadership Award, CAB Mid-Career Investigator Award, and CAB Young Investigator&amp;nbsp;&lt;/font&gt;&lt;span&gt;Award.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Laurencin, M.D., Ph.D. is a University Professor at the University of Connecticut (the 8&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; to be designated in the institution’s over 140 year history). He is the Albert and Wilda Van Dusen Distinguished Endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is Professor of Chemical, and Biomolecular Engineering, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at UCONN. Dr. Laurencin is the Founder and Director of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Center for Biomedical, Biological, Physical and Engineering Sciences at the University of Connecticut and C.E.O. of The Connecticut Convergence Institute for Translation in Regenerative Engineering at UCONN. Dr. Laurencin is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering. Internationally, he is an elected Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, an elected Fellow (Foreign) of the India National Academy of Sciences, an elected Fellow (Foreign) of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and is a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences. Dr. Liu is currently the vice President of ECUST，director of Engineering Research Center for Biomaterial Materials of Ministry of Education，and director of Key Laboratory for Ultrafine Materials of Ministry of Education.&lt;/font&gt; &lt;font face="Arial, sans-serif"&gt;His major research areas include biomaterials and tissue regeneration, fabrication of inductive growth factors, and designing of bioactive skeletal substitutes for bone repair.&lt;/font&gt; &lt;font face="Arial, sans-serif"&gt;He developed a few novel biomaterials and received CFDA approvals. He was elected to the fellow of international Biomaterials Science and Engineering (2012) and American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) Fellow (2018). Laurencin, M.D., Ph.D. is a University Professor at the University of Connecticut (the 8&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; to be designated in the institution’s over 140-year history). He is the Albert and Wilda Van Dusen Distinguished Endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is Professor of Chemical, and Biomolecular Engineering, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at UCONN. Dr. Laurencin is the Founder and Director of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Center for Biomedical, Biological, Physical and Engineering Sciences at the University of Connecticut and C.E.O. of The Connecticut Convergence Institute for Translation in Regenerative Engineering at UCONN. Dr. Laurencin is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering. Internationally, he is an elected Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, an elected Fellow (Foreign) of the India National Academy of Sciences, an elected Fellow (Foreign) of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and is a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences. Dr. Laurencin is an Academician and Member (Foreign) of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Dr. Liu is currently the vice President of ECUST，director of Engineering Research Center for Biomaterial Materials of Ministry of Education，and director of Key Laboratory for Ultrafine Materials of Ministry of Education.&lt;/font&gt; &lt;font face="Arial, sans-serif"&gt;His major research areas include biomaterials and tissue regeneration, fabrication of inductive growth factors, and designing of bioactive skeletal substitutes for bone repair.&lt;/font&gt; &lt;font face="Arial, sans-serif"&gt;He developed a few novel biomaterials and received CFDA approvals. He was elected to the fellow of international Biomaterials Science and Engineering (2012) and American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) Fellow (2018). He was also a recipient of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation-Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation Award (2007), the National Award for Natural Science (The Second Place) in 2014, the National Award for Science and Technology Progress (The Second Place) in 2003.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Dr. Li’s research focuses on synthesis, characterization and application of novel nanomaterials and biomaterials. Dr. Li is an inventor of a biomimetic nanocomposite technology. Based on this technology, several dental and orthopedic products have been cleared by FDA and are currently available in the market. Li’s research has been funded by the NSF, NIH and other federal agencies and he is also a recipient of the NSF’s CAREER award.&amp;nbsp;Dr. Li is also CEO and co-founder of Nanova Inc., a biotech start-up based in Columbia, MO. Nanova is currently working on three areas: medical devices, drug discovery and development, and environmental technologies. With both entrepreneurial and academic experience, Dr. Li is trying to build bridges between academia, industry, and financial firms in order to create unique values to the society.&amp;nbsp;Dr. Li is trained as a materials scientist with bachelor and master degree from Xi’an Jiaotong University and Ph.D. degree from Stevens Institute of Technology and also obtained postdoctoral training from Brown University in nanotechnology.&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
