CAB-SFB Workshop: Biomaterials Science Excellence and Technology Transition

In collaboration with Society for Biomaterials (SFB), CAB successfully organized a Biomaterials Science Excellence and Technology Translation Workshop at the SFB Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA on April 3, 2019. The workshop included invited presentations/lectures from global biomaterial leaders in biomaterials science and a panel discussion to discuss biomaterial innovation, international collaboration, venture investment, company startups, intellectual property, and other key elements en route to successful biomaterial technology translation. CAB also took this opportunity to present awards to a few outstanding scientists in three categories: CAB Global Biomaterials Leadership Award, CAB Mid-Career Investigator Award, and CAB Young Investigator Award.

CAB Global Biomaterials Leadership Awards

                          

         Prof. Cato Laurencin (Middle)                     Prof. Changsheng Liu (Middle)

Cato Laurencin, MD, PhD

Cato T. Laurencin, M.D., Ph.D. is a University Professor at the University of Connecticut (the 8th to be designated in the institution’s over 140 year history). He is the Albert and Wilda Van Dusen Distinguished Endowed Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is Professor of Chemical, and Biomolecular Engineering, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering at UCONN. Dr. Laurencin is the Founder and Director of the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Center for Biomedical, Biological, Physical and Engineering Sciences at the University of Connecticut and C.E.O. of The Connecticut Convergence Institute for Translation in Regenerative Engineering at UCONN. Dr. Laurencin is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering. Internationally, he is an elected Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, an elected Fellow (Foreign) of the India National Academy of Sciences, an elected Fellow (Foreign) of the Indian National Academy of Engineering and is a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences. Dr. Laurencin is an Academician and Member (Foreign) of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. This award recognizes his global leadership in biomaterials innovation and technology translation.

Changsheng Liu, PhD

Changsheng Liu, PhD. is the Cheung Kong Scholar Professor of East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Liu is currently the vice President of ECUST,director of Engineering Research Center for Biomaterial Materials of Ministry of Education,and director of Key Laboratory for Ultrafine Materials of Ministry of Education. His major research areas include biomaterials and tissue regeneration, fabrication of inductive growth factors, and designing of bioactive skeletal substitutes for bone repair. He developed a few novel biomaterials and received CFDA approvals. He was elected to the fellow of international Biomaterials Science and Engineering (2012) and American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) Fellow (2018). He was also a recipient of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation-Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation Award (2007), the National Award for Natural Science (The Second Place) in 2014, the National Award for Science and Technology Progress (The Second Place) in 2003. This award recognizes his global leadership in biomaterials innovation and technology translation.

Liming Bian, PhD

Liming Bian, PhD is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was recognized for his innovative work on biofunctionalizing biomaterials for stem cell-based regenerative therapies. The findings from these studies provide the critical insights to the design of polymeric biomaterials with molecular dynamics for enhanced biomaterial functions. Dr. Bian’s research work has been published in the leading journals including PNAS, JACS, Nano Letters, Biomaterials, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Advanced Science, ACS Nano, ACS Central Science, Macromolecules, Small, and Chemistry of Materials. He was a receipent of BMES CMBE Rising Star Award, CHUK Young Researcher Award, and Asian Biomaterials Congress Young Investigator Award.

Qiaobing Xu, PhD

Qiaobing Xu, PhD is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tufts University. He was recognized for his contribution on developing synthetic biodegradable lipid like materials for intracellular protein delivery for therapeutics including rare diseases and genome editing. His work has been published in leading journals such as Nature, Nature BME, JCI, PNAS, JACS, Angew Chem, and highlighted by Science and news media such as Genomeweb and C&E News. Dr. Xu has received several notable awards, including Pew Scholar for Biomedical Sciences from Pew Charitable Trusts, NSF CAREER award and the Rising Star Award from BMES/CMBE program.

Donghui Zhu, PhD

Donghui Zhu, PhD is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at University of North Texas. He was recognized for his contribution to biodegradable metallic biomaterials for regenerative and translational medicine. Dr. Zhu have published over 50 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious journals such as Blood, Nature Neuroscience, Advanced Science, and Biomaterials. He was a recipient of Outstanding Junior Faculty Research Award from College of Engineering of North Carolina AT State University. He has recently received two NIH R01 grants.

Bin Duan, PhD

Bin Duan, PhD is an Assistant Professor at University of Nebraska Medical Center. He was recognized for his contribution on 3D bioprinting of living tissues to study stem cell functions. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed papers, 8 book chapters, and 4 patents. Dr. Duan was a recipient of American Heart Association (AHA) Postdoctoral Fellowship, AHA Scientist Development Grant Award, Gilmore Distinguished New Investigator Award at UNMC, and Orthopedic Biomaterials SIG Outstanding Abstract Award at 2019 SFB Annual Conference (2019). His research has been funded by AHA SDG, and NIH (R01 and R21 as PI).

Michael Mitchell, PhD

Michael Michelle, PhD is a Skirkanich Assistant Professor of Innovation in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He was recognized for his contribution on developing novel drug and gene delivery technologies for regenerative medicine and immunotherapy. He has received numerous award at his early career stage. To name a few, he was a recipient of NIH New Innovator Award, BMES Rising Star Award in Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering, Selected Delegate of Academy of Achievement International Summit, Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award at the Scientific Interface (CASI), and Skirkanich Assistant Professor of Innovation Endowed Chair.

Qing Liu, PhD, President and CEO

Beijing Advanced Medical Technologies

President and CEO of Beijing Advanced Medical Technologies (AMT)Director of Engineering Research Center for Biomaterials & Medical Device 3D Printing at Fudan Zhangjiang Institute, adjunct Professor at Tongji University, Shanghai, China. Dr. Liu received his Ph.D. degree in biomaterials from Twente University (the Netherlands) in 1997, He did his postdoctoral training at Rice University from 1997-1999. Dr. Liu has over 25 years of R&D experience in biomaterials and medical device. From 2002-2007, Dr. Liu served as Director of Biomaterials R&D at Celgene Corporation where he directed the stem cell and biomaterial combination product development programs. He co-founded 3D Biotek in 2007 and served as CEO/CSO. In 2011, he founded AMT to develop totally bioresorbable coronary and peripheral stents using proprietary 3D printing technologies.

Lihua Zheng, JD, PhD, Partner

Dr. Lihua Zheng, is a founding partner and owner of Zheng & Karg LLP. Dr. Zheng advises on both corporate and intellectual property aspects of technology commercialization. He specializes in IP licensing, venture capital financing, patent portfolio management, corporate partnering, and joint ventures. Dr. Zheng is licensed in the State of New York and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. He is also a registered patent attorney at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Dr. Zheng’s practice encompasses a broad range of technical areas, including biomaterials, biotechnologies, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, botanical medicines, medical devices, healthcare, medical devices, and consumer products. With deep understandings of both technical and legal nature, Dr. Zheng is particularly experienced in serving companies in the healthcare industry such as life sciences and pharmaceutical companies.

James Malayter, Managing Partner, Senior VP

Acuitive Technologies, Inc.

Mr. Malayter provides extensive product development and marketing experience gained from his years working in executive management positions for big companies such as Pfizer, Howmedica and Zimmer. He has also played a pivotal role in guiding several start-up companies such as Osteonics, Implex Corp. and Pipeline Orthopedics to successful exits. His tenure in teaching Biology, Chemistry and Physics assisted his ability to communicate complex concepts into tangible medical devices that are designed to improve patient clinical outcomes. Through his direct interaction with surgeons and scientists he has helped to develop several technologies that have defined a new standard in their respective market segments (i.e. Trabecular Metal). Mr. Malayter is currently a Founding Partner in Acuitive Technologies, Inc.

Hao Li, PhD

Professor of University of Missouri, Columbia

CEO of Nanova Inc.

Hao Li is a professor in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Missouri. Dr. Li’s research focuses on synthesis, characterization and application of novel nanomaterials and biomaterials. Dr. Li is an inventor of a biomimetic nanocomposite technology. Based on this technology, several dental and orthopedic products have been cleared by FDA and are currently available in the market. Li’s research has been funded by the NSF, NIH and other federal agencies and he is also a recipient of the NSF’s CAREER award. Dr. Li is also CEO and co-founder of Nanova Inc., a biotech start-up based in Columbia, MO. Nanova is currently working on three areas: medical devices, drug discovery and development, and environmental technologies. With both entrepreneurial and academic experience, Dr. Li is trying to build bridges between academia, industry, and financial firms in order to create unique values to the society. Dr. Li is trained as a materials scientist with bachelor and master degree from Xi’an Jiaotong University and Ph.D. degree from Stevens Institute of Technology and also obtained postdoctoral training from Brown University in nanotechnology.
